NotesIn the mid-1930s, fine sand or gravel was being taken from a beach at Yachats and used for road-building. Local residents were upset, because the gravel taken was used by spawning smelt. They asked the senior author if the gravel were special and needed by the fish. In this interesting article, he studied this species spawning in Puget Sound and concluded that the Yachats gravel did indeed have the characteristics the fish needed to anchor their eggs. “We may conclude that . . . existence depends upon a fundamental order in the seemingly casual shifting of the sand on the beaches.”
